Material and Manufacturing Process
FRP octopus sculptures are made from fiberglass reinforcement combined with a polymer resin resulting in a strong yet lightweight material. Other additives, such as fire retardants and UV stabilizers, are included to add more value to the sculpture for longevity benefits in colors, UV regeneration.
The manufacturing process starts with making a mold from the sculpture, often from a wooden carved mold but could also be cast. Once the mold is made, layers of fiberglass matting are soaked to saturation with resin to build the sculpture. After curing, the sculpture is refined through sanding and priming.
This technique allows for detailing such as realistic skin texture, detailed poses, and internal reinforcement of the sculpture for large installations that traditional casting methods would be more expensive to execute. Compared to traditional large sculptural methods/fabrication, FRP fabrication allows for greater design freedom.
