Space planning for small neighbourhood-based shops is typically 30 to 50 square meters. Medium-sized laundry shops 60 to 100 square meters, and must offer additional services; and will generally have four main areas. There must be sufficient lighting for each area; cool white LED lights are suggested to create an environment conducive to productivity. Furthermore, each area should have appropriate ventilation systems – either exhaust fans or centralised systems – in order to remove excess moisture and odours. Walls and floors should be finished in light colours, with accented contrasting colours in a limited number; surfaces should be finished as clean and spacious.
Showcase your laundry service using display fixtures that highlight what you do and how much you charge, as well as showcase customers’ garments. Be sure you have durable, practical, and easy-to-read fixtures for your services/prices, including an entrance sign that is large, high-contrast and easy to see when entering. At the front of the store and reception area, display a list of services and prices with a description of what each service includes. To pique interest in special services, use framed “before and after” photos. Other items displayed as part of your laundry service include adjustable hanging racks with hangers for displaying sample garments.
Furniture Selection
Laundry furniture must be sturdy enough to stand up to cleaning products, heavy traffic, and maintenance. The reception counter has a waterproof stainless steel top with quartz underneath. The storage drawers are located below the countertop for easy access by both staff and customers. For waiting areas use either plastic or metal chairs that can be wiped down after each customer visit. Corner lockers will provide storage for employees’ belongings. For dry cleaning services use sturdy metal racks and a heat resistant, waterproof stain-removal table that has its own sink.
